One of the major frustrations of trying to work at home is finding that first legitimate opportunity. It’s time consuming and can be very, very frustrating.

However, you can speed things up a little if you are determined. While these steps may not guarantee you find something right for you right away, they can help you to keep the process moving forward.

The first thing is to know what you are after. You don’t need to waste time chasing after every random opportunity that comes your way. Know what you are willing to do and what is just not interesting.

Then you need to treat your job hunt just as you would treat the hunt for a job outside the home; that is to say as a job in and of itself. If you plan on working at home full time, look for your work at home job full time.

This helps you to build some of the habits you will need to be successful at home, as well as improving your chances of finding work. Working at home is hard, and if you can build your habits before you actually have a job, you should get yourself off to a better start.

Do everything you can to learn what the scams look like. There are all kinds of work at home scams out there, and if you learn the signs, many can be dismissed out of hand, rather than risking your time, or worse, your money on something that won’t work out.

Go beyond the usual internet resources. It’s easy to head on over to Craigslist, Monster and so forth to look for jobs, but consider expanding your search to the offline world as well. Depending on your talents, you may do very well as a freelancer rather than an at-home employee. Virtual assistants and bookkeepers often work on a freelance basis.

What kinds of companies should you contact if freelancing is what you’re after? Small companies in your area may very well need just a little bit of help, but not enough to want to hire an employee. Work for a couple small businesses on a contract basis and you may have what you need.

This does not mean you can’t check the better work at home sites and find the legitimate companies that regularly hire people. However, since many of these receive large numbers of resumes, yours would need to stand out quite a bit in order for you to land a job quickly. It might happen. It does happen. But you can’t always count on it.

The final option I would suggest is to do your research on some of the better paid work at home job boards. Most are scams, but a few provide legitimate and up to date job listings. It can be worth the money to sign up with one, provided you are sure they’re honest.

Research can be quite difficult. Reviews may be biased by thoughts of affiliate income. The BBB may or may not have the information you need. But you can find a few companies that really give you what you need to land an at home job.

And of course, don’t give up. It may take you a while to land the right kind of job, but it is possible. Keep trying, have a good resume, great attitude and know when something sounds wrong. There are jobs out there to be had.

Does anyone know of a legitimate work-from-home-job? There's absolutely no way to tell what's real out there!
I’m a soon-to-be mom (about a month away) who needs to find work ASAP, but with an 8-month pregnant belly, it seems like working from home is the only option. There are so many scams out there, there’s no way to weed through the junk to get to the legitimate work sources. The only ones that I know for sure are safe are Avon and Mary Kay. Please help!

I have spent a lot of time looking at different options. There are a lot of scams out there and get rich quick stuff. None of them work. Its hard work making money online just like any other job.

First off…congrats… I hope your baby is healthy and everything goes well… I have two and I am all set :) no more for me… Boy and a girl…

O.k. to answer your question…Are you familiar with affiliate marketing? I am an affiliate for eBay. I have a small training set up to show you exactly what you need to do to make money with eBay affiliate program. The training is totally free and it is designed for newbies.. but to do this you have to have around $200 to invest… I know it is not easy to spend the money, but if you follow everything outlined in the training you can make that money back before baby is born and while you are taking care of her or him, you will continue to make money… But as soon as you can you have to get back to work, to continue to make money off your website…(all this is outlined in the training!)

Very important…If you do not know anything about website building, you cannot do this…you do not need HTML code knowledge, but you do need to know how to connect hosting, domain and upload your files to the server…I do not really know how to build a site from scratch…but I can do a basic design.

I will show you how to promote those sites as well, but I can only show you the basics as internet marketing constantly changes.

Feel free to ask any questions…And again…all the best.

Hello. Okay. I think I’m managed to find a reasonable solution to your kind of question, which is pretty typical, in my opinion. But let me tell you: You’re right. There will be gazillions of scams that pretty much either waste your time or ask you for money.

Here’s what I answer to people like you:

The only thing I can tell you is that ONLINE businesses can be of two kinds:

    1. Products
    2. Content

By products, you will need to create a niche product. Otherwise, you’re a dead fish. I recommend you focus on something you can create with your hands that people are willing to pay good money for - like a sculpture of some kind that someone with decent money could put on their backyard to add curb appeal or something like that.

For example, a friend of mine crafted a really cool-looking life-size figure of a thinking Don Quixote (from the literary books) and got it sold for $400. The person who bought it sent a picture of the figure thinking in the front lawn. It looked really good, actually.

    So that’s one way.

If you want to sell little things, you’ll have to battle it out with Amazon and all the other major online retailers.

    So pick a niche.

    2. When it comes to content, I recommend you buy a book that teaches you about the PUBLISHING INDUSTRY.

Imagine that you are a journalist writing MAGAZINE ARTICLES. If you ever want to be successful online, this is what you will ultimately have to do.

Let me give you a couple of things I’ve done:

    1. I sell chess sets that I carve myself out of wood, plastic, candles, soap, and other materials. I sell them on my website that I created.

    2. For content, I’ve created a website where you can learn Spanish. This one is growing slowly - which you will DEFINITELY SEE when you’re trying to build your own online business, so don’t quit your day job. I’m still not making any money on it, but you have to realize that you have to build a PLATFORM, some kind of foundation so that when people FINALLY visit your site, you have something to offer in regards to interesting and compelling content.

Take a look at it: http://www.stickyspanish.typepad.com

I have other websites with specific topics. But they are pretty much the same, selling advertising space, using Google Adsense, or just selling specific products.

The best of luck to you. =)

    But it IS possible.

There are a few work at home jobs out there. But the ones that are good, your lucky to make minimum wage and some up around $12 an hour. It’s not enough income to survive on. I’d suggest if you really want to work from home, is to start your own home based business. There are plenty of options in this area.
My husband and I started our own business over six years ago in this and it’s just incredible. We got involved in the telecommunications industry. We partnered up with a 15 year old world wide company that offer services that people use every day and pay for anyway. Services such as local and long distance telephone services, Internet, video phones, VOIP, digital, Satellite T.V. and all the major cellular phone companies have partnered up with them too. How many people do you know that uses any of these services? How would you like it if you could save people money on their services that they are going to be using every day, and make a percentage of everyone’s payments every month? Think about how much money you can make in this industry. It’s just incredible.
If you’d like some information, feel free to email me.
There’s a lot of other business’s that you can get involved in too. I created a blog on my 360 page that your more then welcome to take a look at. There are over half a dozen different ones. If you find one you like, contact the person who wrote it.

I am a divorced mother of three boys so I really needed to make good money. However, I did not want to pay someone else to raise my children. I found an awesome home business where I work 20 hours a week from home, make phenominal money and I’m still able to put my kids first.

I was very lucky to find a lucrative home business and sign up under a sponsor/advisor that gave me a ton of personalized training. I am now a successful advisor at this company and I train 5-10 people a month on how to make great money from home as well. I’m so grateful for the opportunity that was given to me and I really want to give others the opporunity as well.

Just do your due diligence and listen to the people who have succeeded at a home business when making your decision. There are tons of people on the internet that are out there saying certain home businesses are scams and they’re saying that because they tried the business and failed. OR they’re just badmouthing competing businesses to promote their own. Either way - I chose not to listen to people who failed at a business because no matter what business I looked into starting, there will always be people who failed. I chose to listen to the people who succeeded.

So here’s my advice when looking into a home business: find a company with products that are in demand and get you excited, a company with a turnkey system you can plug into that leverages your time and sign up under a sponsor/advisor that is having incredible results and will train you personally.

    Good luck!
